Songkran 2018 in Phuket: Do’s and Don’ts

20 March 2018

Songkran is a magical time in Thailand, officially observed from the 13th to 15th of April. However, many celebrations last for the entire week. Being in Phuket during this festive time is quite an experience.

Songkran is the Thai New Year. It’s a time to pay homage to Buddha, monks, families and friends. The splash of water is symbolic for washing away any misfortune and starting anew. In the past, it was only small bowls of water; now it’s grown to buckets, hoses and water guns, so expect to get wet. For any traveller visiting Thailand, there are several do’s and don’ts of Songkran. It's good to understand the history of Songkran and what it means to Thai culture.

The Three Days of Songkran

Each day of Songkran has different events and rituals.

  • Day one is known as National Elderly Day. Young people pour fragrant water onto the palms of elders, as a token of respect and to ask for blessings.

  • The second day is National Family Day. Families rise early to give alms to the monks. The rest of the day is spent enjoying family time.

  • Another important ritual is Bathing the Buddha image. Devout Buddhists sprinkle special water on Buddha statues at the temple and at home. The most pious engage in Buddhist ceremonies and other activities during the three-day celebration.

2018 Do’s and Don’ts During Songkran

  • You will get wet, so be prepared. If you are on the streets during Songkran 2018, you will get soaked. Knowing this, you’ll need to protect your money, documents and phone from the water. Use a waterproof pack or just leave these in your room.

  • Wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Since you will be wet, choose wisely. The weather will be hot, so consider wearing fabrics that are waterproof or dry quickly, like swimsuits. Wear appropriate shoes that are water resistant. You could wear flip flops or sandals, but be wary that you don't fall due to the excess water.

  • During the water fight, use only water from the tap or the big barrels around the city to be safe.

  • Say “Sawasdee Pee Mai!” during Songkran. It translates to “Happy New Year!” in Thai. As you spray passersby with water, be sure to wish them the best.

  • Always show respect for people and places. Water fights are happening on the streets, but please pay mind to the shops and markets that may be open. Don’t throw water indoors or at those working.

  • Do not drink and drive. Be responsible. Use public transportation or taxis.

  • Do not throw water on motorbikes. This can cause a dangerous situation that could result in injury.

  • Regard monks, elderly people and babies, and don’t splash them. This is highly inappropriate so be careful.

  • Keep in mind, while Songkran looks like a big party, its roots are as an important religious observance.
