Chinese New Year Activities in Phuket

28 January 2018

Home to a large number of Chinese descendants, Chinese New Year has been known as one of the most fascinating times to be in Phuket.

Every year, thousands of travelers visit the island province during this holiday time to revel in the festivity, as well as to get a glimpse of the exotic culture.

Here are a few things you can do to learn about the long history of Chinese-Thai civilization in Phuket.

Visit Phuket Thai Hua Museum

Once a Chinese-language school, this old building on Krabi Road was renovated into a museum exhibiting the rich and complex history of Chinese community in Phuket. Visitors can learn of the Chinese migration and settlement, the old ways of life, traditional attires, and the cuisine. Even if you are not a history enthusiast, you can still get enchanted by the beautiful architecture, as well as the charming design of the museum.

Stroll Around the Old Town

Thanks to the prosperity of tin mining business in the early 19th century, several Sino-Portuguese mansions and shophouses were constructed in the heart of Phuket. These buildings, which were once residence of tin mine tycoons, have been incredibly well-reserved and become targets of admiration from visiting travelers, Thai and foreigners alike. The Old Town is small enough to stroll around in for an hour or two.

 Try Some Local Delicacies

It is a haven for foodies here in this small province. Whether you’re a fan of Chinese cuisine, Thai-Southern dishes, or fresh seafood, Phuket can certainly deliver. Southerners, Phuket residents included, usually eat Dim Sum for breakfast and restaurants here typically provide a vast variety of dim sum to choose from. Southern cuisine is also adored throughout, Massaman Curry, Satay, and Kanom Jeen are some of the most well-liked dishes by foreigners.

Make a Wish at Chinese Shrines

You don’t have to be a spiritual person to enjoy your time at Chinese shrines which are scattered all over the cities. These shrines are distinctively different from typical Buddhist temples and are usually feasts to the eyes. Red and yellow are the main colors used and sacred animals such as dragons and lions can be found at these sites. One of the finest and most popular Chinese shrines in Phuket is the Shrine of Serene Light (Sang Tham Shrine) located in the center of the city.

Join Phuket Chinese New Year Day and Old Phuket Town Festival

It’s the main highlight of this festive season. The Tourism Authority of Thailand Phuket office (TAT) and Phuket City host a big annual celebration during the Chinese New Year and people from around the country, as well as around the world, pour in to get a glimpse of the extravagant event. Four streets are closed to traffic during this celebration and the whole streets are decorated with bright colors and flowers for the occasion. Many upbeat traditional shows are featured, including a dragon dance and a Chinese opera. Food is also a spectacular with some being symbolized for bringing in fortune for the new year.

This year, Phuket Chinese New Year Festival is held from 16 to 18 February 2018.
