Catch Up with the World Cup in Phuket

02 July 2018

The biggest party in the world is here and that’s the FIFA World Cup!

The greatest event in men’s football and according to some, the greatest spectacle in sport, is going to be even bigger and better this year. If you don’t already know, the World Cup is well underway in Russia with 32 teams kicking off the group stages of the tournament. The Group Stage is almost at an end now and we’re beginning to see the next round of contenders emerging from the break. Let’s look at what has happened in each group so far.

Group A

The hosts Russia put in a strong performance and surprised many people to win two of their games to qualify for the next round, second in the group. Russians all over the world are eagerly anticipating the next game for their team, especially after such promising opening performances. The group leaders Uruguay have a perfect 3 wins from their group and after a tentative start, they seem to be finding their way with a 3-0 win over Russia. Egypt, led by superstar Mohamed Salah, has been extremely disappointing and crash out with no wins while  Saudi Arabia will be pleased with their win over Egypt.

Teams that progress: Uruguay, Russia

Group B

This group contains heavyweights Spain and Portugal and they produced an incredible opening game for Group B with a spirited 3-3 that featured an impressive Cristiano Ronaldo hattrick. Both Spain and Portugal will progress to the next stage while Iran put up an impressive showing this year, winning their first game against bottom-placed Morocco and almost outlasting Spain with a 2-1 lead, only for Spain to get a late goal in the end to draw the game.

Teams that progress: Spain, Portugal

Group C

Group winners France progress to the next round with a healthy two wins and a solitary draw against second-placed Denmark. France will fancy their chances at winning the cup this year with some steady performances so far. Denmark has done well by remaining undefeated with draws against Australia and France but a vital win against Peru. Australia lost to Peru as both teams struggled against superior opposition.

Teams that Progress: France, Denmark

Group D

Croatia is the big winners in the group with superb performances earning them 9 points. Their incredible performance vs Argentina will surely go down in the country’s football history as one of their best ever games. Argentina, on the other hand, has struggled during the tournament with awful performances against Iceland and Croatia, drawing 1-1 and losing 3-0, respectively. Their last game against Nigeria set them up for qualification with a 2-1 win. Unfortunately, Nigeria and Iceland could not provide underdog stories for the World Cup this time around, perhaps the next iteration will be brighter.

Teams that progress: Croatia, Argentina

Group E

At the time of writing, the final group E, F, G and H fixtures have not been written but we can speculate where this might end up. Brazil can play for a win against Serbia and Switzerland should have enough for Costa Rica, so it seems likely that they will go through. Brazil vs Serbia should be an entertaining match as both countries have a lot to prove, so pay extra attention to that game.

Teams most likely to progress: Brazil, Switzerland

Group F

Mexico seems to be doing well but the game against Sweden should be the decider and expect Sweden to bring their best game. Germany saved their tournament with a late win against Sweden, so expect a thrashing of South Korea and for Germany to finally awaken. We have yet to see the defending champions really produce a big performance but the stage could not be set any better for a triumphant win for Germany in this next match.

Teams most likely to progress: Germany, Mexico

Group G

England and Belgium have already progressed and they play each other in the final game. Tunisia was expected to provide a few shocks in this group as England and Belgium are not always the most consistent teams around but they did not manage any upsets. Panama was simply not equipped to challenge anybody else in this group and they got thrashed in both games so far. This group seems like a dead rubber.

Teams that progress: England, Belgium

Group H

The closest group in the tournament right now has to be Group H. Senegal and Japan have made a mockery of experts who picked Colombia and Poland to go through. There are still many permutations to who can progress and which team wins the group but Poland is out of the running for sure. The results really hinge on Senegal vs Columbia game, if Senegal wins then Japan and Senegal go through no matter the result of the other game, any other result will require a draw for Japan to get through and if Colombia wins, they go through to the next round.

Teams most likely to progress: Colombia, Japan
