Learn About Loy Krathong While Staying at Family Hotel in Phuket

Learn About the Magic of Loy Krathong in Phuket

It is generally thought that the tradition of Loy Krathong dates back 800 years to the ancient city of Sukhothai in central Thailand. Residents of the city celebrated the full moon of the 12th month of the Thai lunar calendar by floating makeshift baskets on the nearby river. The baskets contained clippings of hair and other personal items of the residents and also contained flowers, candles and joss sticks.

These baskets represented all of the bad luck and ills that the person was currently suffering. It was thought that by floating these baskets off down the river, they would rid themselves of this bad luck and guarantee good luck for themselves in the coming year.

If your basket sailed away from you, it meant that you would have good luck in the coming year. If your basket didn’t float away or came back in your direction, your good luck wasn’t assured. So rivers, with their flowing currents, became popular sites to launch the baskets.

The practice soon spread throughout Thailand and became a much-loved celebration for everyone to take part in. Tourist and visitors are also invited to join in the celebration, which this year falls on November 23rd.

The Loy Krathong Celebration in Phuket

Phuket, being surrounded by water, is a natural place to celebrate the Loy Krathong ceremony. On the evening of the full moon in November, every beach on the island will see participants come down to the water shortly after sunset to launch their individual baskets on the calm waters surrounding Phuket.

It is truly an amazing sight for the whole family to see. The seas around Phuket will be filled with thousands of softly candle-lit floral baskets bobbing on the gentle waves.

You will be able to see people from all walks of life come and participate. Every day workers will launch their small, humble baskets and the wealthy and powerful will drive up in their chauffeur-driven cars and launch elaborate baskets. But they all take part with one thing in common – to rid themselves of bad luck and seek good fortune in the coming year.

The Whole Family Can Take Part in Loy Krathong

When you stay at the Holiday Inn family hotel in Phuket, you will have one of the best seats in the house to take in the splendour of Loy Krathong. But you’re also invited to take part in the celebration because everyone needs a little good luck.

In the early evening of November 23, get your cameras and phones ready and walk down to Patong Beach. Along the way, you will notice a lot of vendors who have set up all along the road and pavements and who have lots of different types of Krathongs for sale. You can spend anywhere from around 50 Baht up to a few hundred Baht for a Krathong, depending on how elaborate it is.

When selecting your Krathong, (and remember that every individual is supposed to have their own) choose one that is made out of naturally biodegradable materials. Don’t buy any Krathongs that use Styrofoam as a base. The law is cracking down on vendors who continue this practice as it’s harmful to marine life and adds to the world’s problem with the growing amount of plastic in our oceans.

Once you’ve made your selection, add some of your own hair or fingernail clippings to it. Some people add offerings like coins or small banknotes to their Krathong as well.

Then walk down to the beach, light your candle and joss sticks and launch your Krathong out on the waves. There may be young kids who will offer, for a nominal fee, to swim your Krathong out beyond the waves in order to guarantee that your Krathong won’t return. These enterprising kids run a lucrative business assuring good luck for locals and tourists alike.

After that, walk along the beach and soak up the atmosphere and take in the impressive sight of thousands of points of light on the ocean, each one representing the hopes and dreams for the coming year.
